“Comment: ‘Understanding human embryo implantation: A research breakthrough’.
Professor Robin Lovell-Badge discusses three new studies that have furthered our understanding of human embryo implantation, by exploring how human embryo and stem cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs) interact with human endometrial tissues in culture.
Professor Lovell-Badge notes how changing UK law, by extending the existing 14 day limit on embryo development research, may impact research on SCBEMs. Professor Lovell-Badge additionally argues that while these studies successfully use cultures to carry out implantation of these embryos, they should not be seen as ectogenesis or a first step towards it. Instead, Professor Lovell-Badge states that ‘what these new studies have demonstrated… is a breakthrough in establishing promising new approaches to the treatment or avoidance of fertility problems (notably implantation failure and early miscarriage) and of congenital disorders.’ Read more for free in BioNews.
