Priyadatt Patel: Few Numbers Cause as Much Unnecessary Distress as AMH

Priyadatt Patel, Senior Gynecologist, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon, IVF and Endometriosis Programme Lead at Balaji Horizon Women’s Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

“Few numbers cause as much unnecessary distress as AMH.

A patient sees a single value on a report, often one she has already Googled, and arrives convinced her chances are over. Much of my early conversation is spent undoing that fear.

So it is worth restating plainly. AMH reflects ovarian reserve, broadly, the quantity of eggs remaining. It does not measure egg quality. It does not, on its own, determine whether a woman can conceive. And a low value in a younger woman carries very different weight than the same value in another context.

The number informs the plan. It does not write the outcome.

As clinicians, how we frame a result matters as much as the result itself. A figure delivered without context can close a door in a patient’s mind that was never actually shut. Our job is to restore the whole picture, not just report the value.

Numbers guide us. They should never be handed over as a verdict.
