Robert Borowczyk: The Invisible Waiting Room

“Some IVF inquiry records end up in a waiting room with no chairs.

The clinic has recorded its last action, but the record does not show what happened next.

I call that The Invisible Waiting Room.

The name belongs to the records, not to the people.

Take a record whose last line says ‘message sent.’ The record shows no later reply or booking, and no clear reason for closing the inquiry.

That record tells us something useful: the clinic acted.

It does not tell us why no reply appears there or whether the inquiry is over.

This is where one word can turn a blank into a verdict.

‘No reply recorded by Friday’ is a fact. ‘Lost’ is a conclusion.

If a report treats them as the same thing, an unanswered question gets a false ending.

My view is that the inquiry should stay visible until the record shows a later result or a clear reason for closing it.

This does not assume that every inquiry can be recovered. It stops the record from claiming more than the clinic knows.

The physical waiting room closes.

The Invisible Waiting Room stays open wherever an inquiry record has no ending.”
