Blessed Obediran: The Science of Donor Conception Is Easy, The Harder Questions Are the Ethical Ones

“Every week, I come across people building their families through donor conception – and every week, I’m reminded that the science is the easy part.

The harder questions are the ethical ones.

How many families should one donor’s genetics touch?
What do donor-conceived children have a right to know, and when?
How much screening is ‘enough,’ and who decides?

There’s no universal answer. But there are a few lines I think matter:

A donor’s medical and genetic history should be as complete and current as science allows — not a snapshot from years ago.
Family limits per donor aren’t a nice-to-have. They’re a safeguard against consequences nobody fully sees coming.
Donor-conceived people are stakeholders in this process too, even before they’re born. Their eventual right to information deserves real weight, not an afterthought.
‘Anonymous’ is quietly becoming a myth in the age of consumer DNA testing. Programs that pretend otherwise aren’t being honest with anyone.

None of this makes the work less meaningful. If anything, taking the ethics seriously is what makes it possible to do this work in good conscience – and to look every family in the eye and mean it when we say we’re on their side.
