Alan Murray: The Legacy of Innovation in Reproductive Medicine
Alan Murray, Founder and CEO at Conceivable Life Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I want to talk about Nuno Costa Borges Costa-Borges, Conceivable Life Sciences’s Director of Experimental Embryology and founder of Embryotools S.L., and his pioneering work on automated ICSI.
In 2023, Nuno led the groundbreaking research on the first babies born through automated intracytoplasmic sperm injection – a system that automated four critical routines of the procedure. This milestone opened the door to what many thought was impossible: fully automating the delicate art of embryology.
Building on this foundation, our team’s remote ICSI paper took automation further by achieving the first live birth from a completely digitally controlled, remotely operated system that automated all 23 micromanipulation steps. The procedure was performed 3,700 kilometers away from the laboratory.
I’m incredibly proud that this work – co-authored with Nuno, Gerardo Mendizabal Ruiz, Alejandro Chavez-Badiola, Jacques Cohen, Mina Alikani, and our brilliant colleagues – won The Robert G. Edwards Prize for best original paper of 2025 from Reproductive BioMedicine Online and became the journal’s most downloaded paper of the year with over 16,000 downloads.
The prize is named after Sir Robert Edwards, the Nobel laureate who pioneered IVF, making this recognition particularly meaningful.
It was an honor to collaborate with this exceptional team on work that extends the legacy of innovation in reproductive medicine.”
