Josefine Königbauer: Is GDM the Same Condition in Singleton and Twin Pregnancies?

Josefine Königbauer, Consultant Obstetrician Prenatal Diagnosis at Charité, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) the same condition in singleton and twin pregnancies?

In our recent study, Selina Balke and Izabela Kotzott compared fetomaternal outcomes in singleton versus twin pregnancies diagnosed with GDM.

While initial OGTT glucose levels were similar in both groups, the need for insulin therapy was significantly lower in twin pregnancies. These findings may suggest differences in the metabolic adaptation or clinical course of GDM in twin gestations.

This raises an important question for clinical practice:
Should GDM in twin pregnancies perhaps be interpreted—and potentially managed—differently than in singleton pregnancies?
