Akanksha Khubbar: A Small Step Towards Smarter IVF Laboratories

Akanksha Khubbar, Junior Embryologist at Ferty9 Fertility Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“A small step towards smarter IVF laboratories.

I recently came across an interesting study published in Nature Medicine on the use of microfluidic automation for oocyte recovery during IVF by Mutlu et.al.

Traditionally, embryologists manually search follicular fluid under the microscope to identify and recover oocytes. This study explored whether an automated microfluidic system, FIND-Chip, could make this process more efficient.

The results were quite encouraging – the automated system achieved a higher oocyte recovery rate (73.1% vs. 45.8%) compared with manual searching, while maintaining comparable oocyte quality and fertilization outcomes.

What I found particularly interesting is how technology can complement the skills of embryologists rather than simply replace manual work. Recovering even a few additional oocytes can potentially provide more opportunities for fertilization and embryo development, while also reducing the workload and variability associated with manual searching.

As someone working in clinical embryology, I find these developments exciting because they show how automation, microfluidics, and AI can gradually become part of the IVF laboratory, helping us make our processes more efficient and consistent.

A fascinating glimpse into the future of IVF laboratory practice.”
