Kanishka Gaur: Amenorrhea Is a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis

Kanishka Gaur, Nutritionist at Heald, shared on LinkedIn:

”No period for months? Don’t just wait for it to come back.

Amenorrhea is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

In PCOS, missing periods often reflect chronic anovulation, frequently linked with insulin resistance and disrupted ovarian hormone signaling.

But the same symptom can also occur with:

  • Low energy intake or restrictive dieting
  •  Excessive exercise
  • Chronic stress
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Elevated prolactin
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency

And the consequences depend on the cause.

With PCOS, prolonged anovulation can expose the endometrium to unopposed estrogen, increasing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

With hypothalamic amenorrhea, low estrogen can affect bone health.

So the goal isn’t simply to ‘get your period.’

The goal is to identify why ovulation has stopped and address the underlying problem.

Nutrition can be part of that solution, but the strategy depends entirely on the cause.”
