Aritra Pradhan: Standing in Front of Living History – India’s 1st Test Tube Baby

“Glad to share a moment that left me speechless, and honestly, a little emotional.

Today, I watched my father, Dr. A. K. Pradhan, stand in the same frame as Ms. Kanupriya Agarwal (Durga) – India’s first test tube baby, born on 3rd October 1978 through the extraordinary work of Dr. Subhash Mukherjee, the Father of Test Tube Baby in India. This wasn’t just a photograph. It felt like standing in front of living history – a dream that once seemed impossible, now standing right there, smiling.

Durga’s birth was the result of one man’s courage – a scientist who, decades ahead of his time, quietly changed the course of reproductive medicine in India, against all odds and with almost no recognition in his own lifetime. Even today, thinking about that kind of quiet, relentless conviction gives me goosebumps.

My father, along with legends like Professor B. N. Chakraborty and many others who have spent over 35 years of their lives filling countless empty arms with the joy of parenthood – I carry their legacy forward every single day. It isn’t just a profession to me. It’s a sacred vow.

After 12 years away, I’ve returned to my roots – West Bengal. Words can’t fully capture what this homecoming means. Today, working full-time at Sharanya Superspeciality Hospital, Bardhaman, isn’t just a new chapter for me – it feels like coming home in every sense. A quiet promise to this land, to its people, and to the mentors who taught me that science means nothing without compassion.

Dr. Subhash Mukherjee, Durga, my father, Professor Chakraborty – different journeys, different struggles, but one shared dream: that no mother’s arms should remain empty. To carry that dream forward is a privilege I don’t take lightly.

To my father – still my biggest inspiration – to all my mentors, my family, and every patient who has trusted us in their most difficult moments: thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Your faith is what keeps me going.
