Asma Khalil: Preconception Health Remains One of the Most Underutilised Opportunities
Asma Khalil, Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine at St. George’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Preconception health remains one of the most underutilised opportunities to improve pregnancy outcomes.
Both obesity and being underweight are associated with increased risks during pregnancy, affecting maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. While obesity is linked to complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, fetal macrosomia, and operative birth, underweight status may reflect nutritional deficiencies that can contribute to fetal growth concerns and maternal anaemia.
As clinicians, we also recognise that weight management is complex, multifactorial, and often challenging for our patients. Conversations about weight should be evidence-based, compassionate, and focused on supporting women to optimise their health before pregnancy.
Improving access to effective preconception care has the potential to benefit both current and future generations.”
