Asma Khalil: BPS Position Statement on Medication Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Asma Khalil, Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine at St. George’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“BPS Position Statement on Medication Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Time to Close the Evidence Gap
I welcome the British Pharmacological Society’s position statement on medication use in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Over 80% of women require medication during this time, yet we continue to face significant gaps in evidence due to historical exclusion from research. This is not a neutral issue – it affects clinical decision-making, maternal health, and outcomes for babies.
This statement provides a clear and much-needed roadmap: improving inclusion in research, strengthening real-world data, and enhancing how we communicate risk to support informed decision-making.
This is a pivotal moment to move from caution through exclusion to safe, evidence-based inclusion.”
