Bonnie Feldman: Unlocking Opportunities in Autoimmune Women’s Health

Bonnie Feldman, CEO and Founder of Autoimmune Connect, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The Women’s Health market stands on the brink of significant opportunity in autoimmune, with 80% of the top 20 pharma companies already making their mark in this space.

And for good reason: autoimmune is 700 symptoms across 105 conditions, and women make up nearly 80% of patients. Men are 𝟮𝘅 likely to survive, and fewer than 13% of Americans can name an autoimmune disease.

Diagnosis delay = decades of innovation lost

The cost of late recognition is enormous — for patients and for the market.

  • Lupus, often called ‘the great imitator,’ takes an average of 6 years to diagnose.
  • 63% of patients are misdiagnosed, and 55% see 4+ providers first.

One-Size-Fits-All Medicine = One-Sided Outcomes

Even after diagnosis, gaps in autoimmune care for women reveal major opportunities for innovation.

  • Those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) spend 2.7× more time in poor health than men.
  • Among lupus patients, 75% face limited daily activity, 10-15% die prematurely, and only 15% can work full-time.

It’s time to push for care and treatment models that reflect women’s immune biology—and unlock the full ROI potential in this category.

Immense gratitude to authors Alisa Wilson, Jean Liao, and Lucy Zeka, and to key contributors from Springboard Enterprises (Julie Silverstein, Amani Bright, Miranda Ewald) and Accenture (Aisling Clube, Julia Lasater, Charlotte Liebling, Nilam Patel, Wei Xuan Tan, Caroline Taylor) for an outstanding report that pushed the autoimmune conversation in women’s health like never before.

Follow, connect, and join the conversation on my LinkedIn as we work to build a lasting legacy of better outcomes for autoimmune patients.
