Beata Blazkova: Your AI Gave the Embryo a 7.2, Now Explain It
Beata Blazkova, ESHRE-Certified Senior Clinical Embryologist at Prague Fertility Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A patient asks their embryologist about the AI score assigned to their embryo:
‘Your AI gave this embryo a 7.2. What does that mean?’
‘It’s the AI score.’
‘I know. But what does 7.2 actually mean?’
‘It means the embryo is good.’
‘Good for what? Implantation? So, 72% chance of implantation?’
‘No. Not necessarily.’
‘Then what does 7.2 mean?’
‘Higher score means a better embryo.’
‘Better at reaching blastocyst?’
‘No.’
‘More likely to be euploid?’
‘Not necessarily.’
‘Clinical pregnancy?’
‘Depends on the model.’
‘Live birth?’
‘Not necessarily.’
‘So… what exactly does 7.2 mean?’
This is not a trivial question.
If we use an AI embryo-selection model in our laboratory, every embryologist using it should be able to answer:
What does the score represent?
And just as importantly:
What does it not represent?”
