“Biochemical Pregnancy After IVF

A positive pregnancy test after IVF can bring an incredible moment of hope. But when β-hCG rises and then falls before an intrauterine pregnancy is visible and can be confirmed on ultrasound, the experience can be confusing and deeply emotional.

This is often described as a biochemical pregnancy – an early pregnancy loss detected through hCG testing before a gestational sac is visible.

Here are important questions patients and fertility professionals often encounter.

  • What is a biochemical pregnancy?
  • Does a biochemical pregnancy mean the IVF worked?
  • Is it the same as a miscarriage?
  • Why does it happen?
  • Does embryo quality completely prevent it?
  • Does a biochemical pregnancy mean something went wrong with the uterus?
  • Does it mean future IVF will fail?
  • Should patients immediately undergo extensive testing?
  • Could genetic factors be involved?
  • Can lifestyle factors explain a biochemical pregnancy?
  • Does a biochemical pregnancy count as recurrent pregnancy loss?
  • Is a biochemical pregnancy the same as implantation failure?
  • Can another pregnancy happen after a biochemical pregnancy?
  • What should patients take away from the experience?

Perhaps the most important message is:

A biochemical pregnancy is real, even if it was very early.

Moving the Conversation Forward

These are precisely the kinds of questions that require collaboration between fertility specialists, reproductive endocrinologists, embryologists, geneticists, researchers, and patients.
