Daniel Roshan: Maternal Nail Polish Use and Potential Fetal Exposure
Daniel Roshan, CEO at Rosh Maternal-Fetal Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Pregnancy and the Use of Nail Polish
Many pregnant individuals wonder whether it is safe to continue using nail polish during pregnancy. In general, occasional use of nail polish is considered low risk, but understanding ingredients and taking simple precautions can help reduce unnecessary exposure.
Traditional nail polishes may contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). High or prolonged exposure to these substances has raised concerns in occupational settings, such as nail salons, but the limited exposure from personal, occasional use at home is much lower. Modern formulations have improved significantly, and many brands now offer ‘3-free,’ ‘5-free,’ or ‘7-free’ polishes that eliminate some of these chemicals.
Ventilation is an important safety factor. Applying nail polish in a well-ventilated area helps minimize inhalation of fumes. Taking breaks between manicures and avoiding prolonged or frequent exposure—such as daily use or long salon visits—can further reduce risk. If visiting a salon, choosing one with good airflow and hygiene practices is recommended.
Nail polish removers also deserve attention. Acetone-based removers are effective but have strong fumes that may cause nausea or headaches during pregnancy. While acetone is not known to be harmful to the developing baby in small amounts, non-acetone removers can be a gentler option for those sensitive to smells.
Overall, using nail polish occasionally during pregnancy is generally considered safe, especially when choosing safer formulations and practicing good ventilation. As with many lifestyle choices in pregnancy, moderation and awareness are key.”
