Devi Jyothikrishnan: A Milestone That Means So Much to Me in My Embryology Journey

Devi Jyothikrishnan, Laboratory Practitioner at Care Fertility Bath, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Last week, I completed my competency in oocyte retrieval, a milestone that means so much to me in my embryology journey.

The process itself is rigorous: first observing procedures, then completing collections under direct supervision, followed by indirect supervision where every follicular fluid check matters. To achieve competency, you need to complete 10 consecutive egg collections without missing a single oocyte- if one is missed, you restart from the beginning.

I’m incredibly grateful and proud to have completed my 10 consecutive collections within just 15 days. While I was nervous throughout, especially during the final cases where I took extra care and time to ensure I didn’t miss an egg, my embryology and nursing teams were endlessly patient, supportive, and encouraging.

A special thank you to Georgia M., who constantly reassured and encouraged me throughout my final collection day. While I was taking my time to be absolutely certain, she kept reminding me that she believed in me and that I would get there and those words genuinely meant so much in that moment.

What made the day even more special was returning to my desk after completing the competency to find coffee, brownies, and the sweetest congratulatory note from my Lab Manager Caroline Drew and Deputy Lab Manager, Sarah Bennett waiting for me. And to top it all off, receiving a lovely e-card from Sarah truly made my day. The fact that they had already arranged everything before I had even officially finished meant so much and reminded me how lucky I am to be surrounded by such an incredible team.

Looking back at the past 7 months, I feel incredibly grateful for how much I’ve been able to learn and grow within the laboratory. From semen analysis, sperm preparation, sperm freezing and thaw procedures, cryo handling, dish preparation, independent IUI procedures, internal semen analysis QC, patient briefings, and now achieving competency in oocyte retrieval, every opportunity has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’m also excited to continue developing further while training in FET procedures.

A huge thank you to my entire embryology team for guiding me, supporting me, celebrating even the smallest wins with me, and constantly pushing me to grow with confidence. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust they have placed in me and for all the opportunities I continue to receive every single day.

Here’s to continuing to learn, grow, and contribute to the world of reproductive medicine and embryology.”
