When Immunity Blocks Fertility – EFS
The European Fertility Society (EFS) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When the Immune System Disrupts Fertility
Not all fertility challenges are hormonal or anatomical. Increasing evidence shows that the immune system can determine whether an embryo implants, a pregnancy continues, and how the placenta develops.
Who is most at risk?
- Patients with unexplained RIF – often showing elevated NK cell activity or a Th1-skewed immune profile.
- Women with autoimmune diseases – from SLE to APS, where autoantibodies may damage placental tissues and drive pregnancy loss.
- Those with endometriosis, microbiome imbalance, or PCOS – conditions marked by chronic inflammation.
- Individuals over 35, with obesity, GDM, or a history of pre-eclampsia – where immunosenescence and metabolic inflammation disrupt maternal–foetal tolerance.

This article highlights just how crucial immune balance is in reproductive medicine and why understanding immunological vulnerabilities can transform treatment outcomes.
