When the Immune System Shapes Fertility – The European Fertility Society
The European Fertility Society (EFS) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Understanding Reproductive Immunology: When the Immune System Shapes Fertility
Did you know that a healthy pregnancy depends on a delicate dialogue between the mother’s immune system and the developing embryo?
The maternal immune system must achieve a remarkable balance – tolerating the semi-allogeneic fetus (which carries both maternal and paternal genes) while still protecting the body against infections. When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to challenges such as infertility, recurrent implantation failure, miscarriage, or preeclampsia.
Sometimes, the immune system mistakenly produces autoantibodies – antibodies that target the body’s own tissues – and this can interfere with ovarian function, placental development, and embryo implantation.
Reproductive immunology reminds us that fertility is not only about hormones and anatomy – the immune system plays a powerful role in shaping reproductive success. Understanding and addressing immune-related factors can open new paths to hope and healing for many couples.
