Gaity Ahmad: From Strategy to Surgery Closing the Women’s Health Gap
Gaity Ahmad, Member of Guideline Committee RCOG at Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The new Women’s Health Strategy is a promise for the future. But women in Greater Manchester are in a crisis today.
Policy is a start.
But the data is staggering:
- The 65-Week Failure: Nationally, ~7,500 patients still wait over 15 months for surgery.
- The Gender Gap: Gynaecology patients represent a huge, unfair share of these long waits.
- The Greater Manchester Crisis: 40,000 women are currently waiting for care in our region.
- Surgical Backlog: 10,000 of those women are waiting specifically for an operation.
- The Diagnostic Delay: Many of these women have already waited 9+ years for an Endometriosis diagnosis.
We cannot ‘tackle medical misogyny’ while women wait over a year and a quarter for basic surgical care.
A hidden data- women wait more than 10 years for diagnosis and treatment of a chronic disease endometriosis which affects 1 in 10 of women.
A 10-year strategy is a welcome step. But the 10,000 women in GM waiting for surgery need a ‘right now’ solution.
Policy is a promise. Patients need procedures, access to specialists and theatres.
Let’s work together to address health inequality.”
