Shivam Rathore: Why Temperature and Humidity Control in IVF Labs is Non-Negotiable?
Shivam Rathore, Intern Embryologist at Indira IVF Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Why Temperature and Humidity Control in IVF Labs is Non-Negotiable..
Today in the laboratory, observing real-time environmental parameters reminded me of a fundamental truth in embryology;
Success in IVF does not start at fertilization, it starts with the environment.
Maintaining optimal temperature and humidity is not just a technical requirement, but it is a biological necessity.
1. Temperature Control
According to Textbook of Assisted Reproductive Techniques by David Gardner, strict temperature regulation is essential to maintain physiological conditions (~37°C) during gamete and embryo handling. Even brief deviations can disrupt meiotic spindle integrity, increasing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and compromised embryo development.
Research shows that even short exposure to suboptimal temperatures can lead to spindle depolymerization and developmental failure.
2. Humidity Control
Maintaining relative humidity (~40–60%) in laboratory areas is equally critical to prevent media evaporation and osmotic stress, which can silently impact embryo viability.
Poor humidity control can altered osmolarity that can create cellular stress results in reduced implantation potential.
- Recommended Environmental Range:
- Temperature (IVF Lab): 22–26°C
Humidity: 40–60%
Continuous monitoring, calibration, and strict QC protocols are indispensable for maintaining these parameters.
Because in Embryology, even the smallest environmental fluctuation can make the biggest difference.”
