Nicole McPherson: Changing IVF Practices Is Hard – Integration Needs to Be Easy
Nicole McPherson, Director of Research, Science Education and Diagnostic Laboratories at Genea, shared on LinkedIn:
“Changing IVF Practices Is Hard. Integration Needs to Be Easy.
In IVF, change is never simple.
Even when new technologies show promise, clinics face a real and understandable barrier: process change is daunting.
Embryology labs run on finely tuned workflows built through years of experience, training, and quality control. Every step from gamete handling to culture conditions to embryo assessment is deeply interconnected.
Introducing something new often means retraining staff, rewriting SOPs, adjusting QC systems, and navigating regulatory implications. In a field where consistency is everything, even small disruptions can feel risky.
That’s why meaningful innovation in IVF can’t just be scientifically strong it has to be operationally realistic.
One of the core principles behind Affinyx is exactly this: new tools should fit into existing workflows without requiring major upskilling or disruptive change. If we want clinics to adopt better ways of understanding and selecting sperm, those tools must be:
- simple to implement.
- compatible with current lab processes.
- easy for embryologists to learn and trust.
- aligned with existing QC and regulatory frameworks.
Innovation only matters if it can be used and used consistently.
As the field pushes toward more modern, biologically meaningful approaches to sperm assessment, we need solutions that respect the realities of IVF labs. Change is hard. Integration shouldn’t be.”
