“What is the goal? What will be removed? Who is on the team? How will fertility be protected? What happens after?
Informed consent should go beyond signing a form.
Ask, ask, ask.
Ask how the surgeon identifies and treats different types of disease, whether excision or another technique is planned, what happens if bowel or urinary involvement is found, how healthy ovarian tissue will be protected and what recovery may realistically involve.
Also ask what the plan is if pain persists.
A confident specialist should welcome thoughtful questions and explain both expected benefits and meaningful risks in language you understand.”
