“Fibroids located within the inner myometrium are primarily classified as intramural fibroids or submucosal fibroids with an intramural component.

Because they sit close to or directly contact the endometrium (the inner uterine lining), even small growths in this zone can significantly impact your menstrual cycle and reproductive health.

The inner myometrium, also known as the junctional zone, is a highly active muscular layer responsible for subendometrial contractions.

These contraction waves fluctuate throughout your menstrual cycle to facilitate sperm transport or prevent bacterial entry.

Altered Contraction Mechanics

  1. Hyperperistalsis: a myoma can cause the inner myometrial muscle fibers to contract too frequently or aggressively
  2. Dysperistalsis: the physical mass of the fibroid disrupts the regular direction of the wave-like movement, causing erratic or uncoordinated contractions
  3. Mechanical Compression: the fibroid’s stiff structure exerts continuous physical pressure and strain on the surrounding inner muscle tissue.”
