Hugo Bottemanne: Emotional and Cognitive Effects of Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hugo Bottemanne, Psychiatrist at Bicêtre Hospital – MOOD Center Paris-Saclay, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Depression in women: are there specificities to perimenopause?
Thank you to Agir pour l’Égalité – Think and Do Tank Marie Claire for this symposium dedicated to women’s health in Ministère du Travail, in the presence of Minister Sabrina Roubache, Muriel Pénicaud, Marlène Schiappa Savignac, and a group of researchers and actors from the business world.
Perimenopause is a period of particular vulnerability on the moodic level, linked to hormonal fluctuations, climacteric symptoms and psychosocial changes. There are also brain changes during this period, partially reversible after the onset of menopause, which can modulate the clinical expression of mood disorders.
Regarding the role of hormone replacement therapy, the team from the Department of Psychiatry at University of Cambridge published a study in 2026 in Psychological Medicine evaluating the evolution of brain morphology and mental health in a cohort of 125,000 women, but these results should be interpreted with caution because we still lack data to evaluate this association
Part of the work carried out by the MOODS (Inserm, Paris-Saclay) team and the Service hospitalo-universitaire de Psychiatrie de Bicêtre, in particular through the creation of the ‘Women’s Mental Health’ team (funded by Agence Régionale de Santé Ile-de-France ), aims to respond to the challenges of psychiatric disorders during this period.”
