Nadine Al-Kaisi: The Role of NK Cells and Intralipid Therapy in Reproductive Medicine
Nadine Al-Kaisi, Founder of Eggcellent Fertility, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Natural Killer (NK) Cells and Intralipid Infusions – Science or Speculation?
I’ve seen an increasing number of patients arrive at my consultations having heard about ‘immune-based fertility treatments’ especially NK cell testing and Intralipid infusions.
These approaches are often marketed as solutions for implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage, but the scientific evidence remains… mixed, to say the least.
What we do know:
- NK cells are part of the body’s immune defense and play a complex role in implantation.
- Intralipids (fat emulsions) are believed to ‘calm’ the immune system and reduce NK cell activity.
- Some small studies suggest possible benefits but large randomized controlled trials haven’t confirmed consistent outcomes yet.
And yet, many clinics still offer them as standard add-ons, while others avoid them entirely. My approach was to test under following circumstances:
- Unexplained infertility or multiple failed IVF cycles.
- RPL (two or more miscarriages).
- RIF (three or more failed transfers with good-quality embryos).
As a fertility doctor, I understand the hope behind these treatments, especially when patients have experienced multiple failed transfers. But we owe them transparency and a balanced discussion of risks, benefits, and evidence.
I’d love to hear from my colleagues and peers:
How are you currently handling NK cell testing and Intralipid therapy in your practice?
Do you offer them, monitor NK activity, or focus on other immunologic markers?
It’s time we keep the conversation honest because patients deserve clarity, not confusion.”
