Nitiz Murdia: Guiding You Through IVF – Your Journey’s Pilot

Nitiz Murdia, Director of the Embryology Lab at Indira IVF Group, shared on LinkedIn։

“Have you noticed that turbulence feels less frightening when the pilot warns you first?

‘We’re expecting some bumpy air for the next twenty minutes. This is completely normal. Please keep your seatbelts fastened.’

The bumps are exactly the same. What changes is that someone told you what was coming, and that it was expected.

Fertility treatment needs more pilots like that.

Here is something most couples are never told before IVF.

  • The numbers get smaller at every step.
  • Not every egg collected is mature.
  • Not every mature egg fertilises.
  • Not every embryo keeps growing to day five.

This is normal biology, not failure.

But when no one explains it in advance, every phone call from the lab sounds like bad news. Couples start to blame themselves, their bodies, and sometimes each other.

That fear has a real cost. A large review of 22 studies, covering more than 21,000 patients in eight countries, looked at why people stop fertility treatment.

About one in five of the reasons given was that treatment felt too heavy, physically or emotionally. Almost another one in five was about problems with how the clinic or the system worked.

In other words, many couples don’t stop because medicine failed them. They stop because the experience did.

So how should a couple going through IVF be looked after? In my view, it starts with a proper briefing before take-off.

Walk them through the whole journey, including what might not go to plan. Prepare them for the shrinking numbers. Discuss plan B before plan A begins.

Include both partners in every conversation. Be honest about cost. Give them one person they can call when they’re scared. And keep asking how they feel, not only how many follicles they have.

None of this needs new technology. It needs time, honesty and kindness, and it’s something I keep pushing for across our centres.

The bumps in fertility treatment can’t always be avoided. The fear can.

Who was the ‘pilot’ who prepared you for a difficult moment in your life?”
