ACOG Releases New Guidance on the Use of GLP-1s in Pregnancy and Lactation
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) shared on LinkedIn:
“Today ACOG released new guidance to help ob-gyns counsel patients on the use of GLP-1 medications before, during, and after pregnancy, given the lack of sufficient data around GLP-1 usage and pregnancy-related outcomes.
We recommend that ob-gyns counsel their patients on the limited safety data available and advise their patients to consider stopping GLP-1 medications one to two months before becoming pregnant. Ob-gyns should tell patients that it’s unclear how taking GLP-1 medications in the postpartum period could affect lactation and make shared decisions that consider factors such as limited data, medication specifics, and the needs of the patient and infant.
