Devyanshi Dixit: Can a Pap Smear Help You Get Pregnant?

Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health, shared on LinkedIn:

”Can a Pap smear help you get pregnant?

The answer depends on what you mean by ‘help.’

A Pap smear can not trigger ovulation, improve egg quality or tell you whether your fallopian tubes are open.

So why does cervical health still matter when planning a pregnancy?

Because fertility care is about more than conception alone.

A Pap smear checks cervical cells for changes that could develop into cervical cancer.

It is a screening test-not a fertility test.

A normal result does not confirm that someone can conceive, and an abnormal result does not automatically mean they will have difficulty getting pregnant.

But there is an important nuance.

If a person has a history of abnormal cervical screening or has undergone procedures to remove cervical tissue, that history may be relevant to reproductive and pregnancy care. It deserves individual clinical assessment-not assumptions that fertility is impaired.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine includes cervical screening history and previous cervical procedures in the gynecological history considered during fertility evaluation.

The takeaway? A Pap smear may support preventive health before pregnancy, but it is not a shortcut to conception or a substitute for a proper fertility assessment.

If pregnancy hasn’t occurred after 12 months of trying for someone under 35-or after 6 months at age 35 or older-professional guidance recommends fertility evaluation. Seek advice sooner if there are known risk factors or irregular menstrual cycles.

For gynecologists and fertility specialists: How can we better explain the difference between preconception screening and tests that actually investigate infertility?”
