How Does PMOS Affect Fertility, and Could Research Help Us Understand Why? – ESHRE

European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) shared on LinkedIn:

How does polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as PCOS, affect fertility – and could research help us understand why?

From androgen excess and disrupted insulin signalling in the ovary to possible epigenetic changes in early embryos, research is revealing just how complex the relationship between PMOS and reproduction can be.

Olga Astapova, winner of the MRH Early Career Innovator award, is investigating how androgen action in the ovary may contribute to PMOS/PCOS, with the hope of paving the way for safer and more effective anti-androgen treatments.

Meanwhile, research led by Dr. Qianshu Zhu and presented at the ESHRE Annual Meeting found a distinctive ‘epigenetic memory’ in embryos from women with PCOS, offering new clues about why the condition can run in families.

These are very different pieces of research, but they share an important message: understanding the biology behind PMOS is essential to improving fertility care – from ovulation to assisted reproduction, and potentially beyond.
