Pregnancy Can Shift How a Woman’s Immune System Responds – Contemporary OB/GYN

“New American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) data show that many OBs rarely refer pregnant patients with allergies, asthma, or drug reactions to specialists – even when consultation could improve outcomes.
‘Pregnancy can change how a woman’s immune system reacts,’ said Miriam Al-Saedy. ‘An allergist can help confirm true allergies and guide safe medication use.’
- One in four OBs never referred a patient to an allergist
- 55% lacked clarity on when to refer
- 76% want institutional guidelines
