Chaithra S K: Preimplantation Genetic Testing Still Requires an Embryo Biopsy
Chaithra S K, Medical Director at Ovum Fertility, shared on LinkedIn:
“Preimplantation genetic testing still requires an embryo biopsy. For many patients, that is the part of the cycle that causes the most anxiety.
Which makes non-invasive PGT worth watching.
Conventional PGT-A means removing a few cells from the blastocyst to assess its chromosomes. In experienced hands, it is safe and valuable — but it is technically demanding, and understandably unsettling for the people it’s performed on.
Non-invasive PGT takes a different route. As an embryo develops, it releases cell-free DNA into its culture medium, and the idea is to analyse that rather than biopsy the embryo directly. A gentler, simpler, potentially more affordable test.
The caution is equally real. Concordance with conventional biopsy is not yet consistent, and contaminating DNA remains a genuine problem. For now it is an emerging tool, not a validated replacement.
What interests me is the direction it points in – less invasive, more patient-friendly diagnostics across the field.
The question isn’t whether non-invasive testing arrives. It’s how carefully we validate it before patients are asked to rely on it. In a market that adopts new add-ons quickly, who holds that line?
