“ ‘Your AMH is low’ may be the most panic-generating sentence in fertility care. It deserves a calmer translation.

AMH estimates the size of the remaining egg pool. In treatment planning, that is genuinely useful: it forecasts how the ovaries are likely to respond to stimulation and helps choose protocols and doses.

What it does not do is equally important – it does not measure egg quality, it does not diagnose infertility, and it is a poor predictor of natural conception in the near term. Women with low AMH conceive naturally; ESHRE guidance explicitly cautions against using ovarian-reserve tests alone to deny or delay care.

Age and AMH are also not interchangeable. A 32-year-old and a 42-year-old with the same low number are in very different positions – because egg quality tracks age far more than count.

What a low AMH should trigger is not despair but planning: an honest conversation about timelines, whether to be proactive, and – where fertility preservation or IVF is being considered – sooner rather than later, since ovarian response tends to fall further with time.

A number is information. What you do with it is the medicine.

If low AMH has been the sole reason you were told treatment is not worth attempting, that specific conclusion deserves a second opinion – ovarian response can be low while a meaningful chance remains.”
