Sasha Shillcutt: I Had the Privilege of Being the Keynote Speaker at Women in Medicine Leadership Conference
Sasha Shillcutt, Professor of Anesthesiology at University of Nebraska Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday I had the privilege of being the keynote speaker at the Women in Medicine Leadership conference put on by Dallas County Medical Society. I was invited by the chair of the board and past president Shaina Drummond, who is an University of Nebraska Medical Center alumni.
My talk was on the Art of Leading as a Woman. Afterward, countless women leading shared their stories with me.
At a time when women physicians are leaving healthcare at record numbers, it is critical that institutions and orgs SUPPORT gatherings like yesterday. Data has shown that women who attend conferences are more likely to remain in medicine, stay at their institutions, and are more likely to get promoted.
And yet, as someone who puts on a women’s conference for medicine every year (the Brave Enough Women’s CME conf) more and more institutions are failing to support women to attend these gatherings they’re cutting funds. They’re making it harder for them to get away, and they are not as supportive then if they were to attend the clinical CME conference.
If you are leading in healthcare and you want to improve your culture and your workplace for ALL in healthcare and create a strong workforce – start supporting women to attend these conferences.
And thank you to those who do.”
