Sean Lauber: Can an Aneuploid Embryo Result in a Live Birth?
Sean Lauber, Founder of Remembryo, shared on LinkedIn:
“Can an aneuploid embryo result in a live birth?
I’ve substantially updated my previous post on aneuploid embryo transfers and converted it into an Evidence Guide, including a large new 2026 multicenter study from Viotti et al.
This guide focuses on whole chromosome aneuploid embryos, where PGT-A detects an entire extra or missing chromosome rather than a segmental or mosaic abnormality.
Viotti et al. reported 0 live births after 168 transfers of embryos classified as whole chromosome aneuploid.
Across the available studies, there have now been 2 reported live births after 398 whole chromosome aneuploid embryo transfers, or about 0.5% overall.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean a truly uniformly aneuploid embryo has a 0.5% chance of producing a healthy baby. We wouldn’t expect a truly aneuploid embryo to give rise to a healthy euploid baby.
Viotti et al. noted that the rare published live births haven’t included DNA confirmation linking the resulting child to the tested embryo.
Possible explanations include unassisted pregnancy, laboratory or clerical errors, undetected embryo mosaicism, or borderline PGT-A classifications.
In fact, Viotti et al. described another live birth from an embryo initially classified as whole chromosome aneuploid that was later reclassified by the PGT-A laboratory as high-level mosaic.
It was therefore excluded from their whole-chromosome aneuploid group.
So while healthy live births have occurred after transferring embryos classified as whole chromosome aneuploid, we don’t know whether those embryos were truly uniformly aneuploid.
