Snehal Kaware: Can an Oocyte With a Vacuole Still Fertilize?

Snehal Kaware, Junior Embryologist at Shree Radha Krishna Test Tube Baby Centre, shared on LinkedIn։

”Can an Oocyte With a Vacuole Still Fertilize?

During ICSI, not every oocyte looks perfectly uniform. Sometimes we see cytoplasmic vacuoles – clear, fluid-filled spaces within the ooplasm.

But here’s the interesting part

Does a vacuole mean we should not inject the oocyte?

Not necessarily.

An oocyte with a vacuole can still undergo fertilization after ICSI. However, the size, number, and location of the vacuole may influence oocyte competence and subsequent embryo development.

And one small detail matters during ICSI –  where the sperm is deposited. The sperm should be injected into the cytoplasm, not directly into the vacuole, because the vacuole is a fluid-filled space rather than the functional cytoplasm needed for fertilization.

A small structure, but an important consideration at the ICSI dish.”
