Spermatogenesis: The Journey of Sperm Development
Spermatogenesis is the process by which male gametes (spermatozoa) are produced in the seminiferous tubules of the testes.
- Location: Seminiferous tubules
- Duration: ~64–72 days
Key Stages:
- Spermatogonial Phase: Mitotic proliferation of spermatogonia (stem cells).
- Meiotic Phase: Formation of haploid spermatids via meiosis I and II.
- Spermiogenesis: Morphological transformation of spermatids into mature spermatozoa (head, midpiece, tail).
- Spermiation: Release of spermatozoa into the lumen for epididymal transport.
Hormonal Regulation:
- FSH: Stimulates Sertoli cell activity.
- LH: Stimulates Leydig cells → Testosterone production.
- Testosterone and Inhibin B: Maintain negative feedback on hypothalamic-pituitary axis.
Any disruption in this process (hormonal, genetic, or environmental) can lead to oligospermia or azoospermia, affecting IVF outcomes.
Today’s Question:
In your experience, which factor impacts sperm quality the most — hormonal imbalance, lifestyle (e.g., heat, smoking), or genetic causes?”
