Thomas Molinaro: Why Male Infertility Deserves More Attention Than Ever
Thomas Molinaro, Reproductive Endocrinologist at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In The New York Times article ‘The Problem is With Men’s Sperm’ (Opinion, August 12) Jessica Grose highlights important concerns about environmental toxins and declining global sperm counts, but some claims in the article merit further context.
Frustratingly, the science of male fertility lags behind our understanding of female fertility. There are no good tests to diagnose male fertility. A semen analysis is simply a marker of sperm count and quality, not sperm function.
A seminal New England Journal of medicine study from 2001 (Sperm Morphology, Motility, and Concentration in Fertile and Infertile Men) demonstrated significant overlap in semen parameters between infertile and fertile men – meaning measurable semen parameters are only part of the picture when assessing fertility.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends a full urologic evaluation for any male partner with abnormal semen analysis parameters or medical history. More support for the male side of fertility gives individuals and couples the best chance to achieve a pregnancy. This is why fertility clinics are growing their teams with fellowship-trained urologists.
We need to push forward on male fertility research and evaluate new diagnostic tests and treatments but need to make sure these important conversations don’t get ahead of the scientific data.”
