Vida Shafti։ Is Sleep the Missing Biomarker in Fertility Care?

Vida Shafti, Physician at The OB/Gyn and Infertility Center, shared on LinkedIn։

“Sleep – The Missing Biomarker in Fertility Care?

When discussing infertility, we often focus on ovarian reserve, sperm quality, hormones, or embryo development. Yet one important factor is frequently overlooked: sleep health.

Growing evidence suggests that insufficient or poor-quality sleep may negatively affect reproductive function by:

  • Disrupting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis
  • Altering melatonin secretion and circadian rhythms
  • Increasing oxidative stress and systemic inflammation
  • Affecting ovulation, endometrial receptivity, and sperm quality

Sleep is not simply a lifestyle habit – it is an essential component of reproductive health.

This is where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is opening new opportunities.

AI can integrate data from wearable devices, sleep trackers, hormone profiles, and clinical records to:

  •  Detect hidden sleep disturbances that may influence fertility.
  •  Identify patients at higher risk for poor IVF outcomes.
  •  Predict individualized responses to fertility treatment.
  • Support clinicians in designing personalized interventions before assisted reproduction.

The future of reproductive medicine is moving beyond treating infertility alone. It is about understanding the whole patient, including sleep, metabolism, mental health, and lifestyle.

As fertility specialists, we should consider sleep as a modifiable biomarker rather than a secondary concern. By combining clinical expertise with AI-driven analytics, we can move toward truly personalized fertility care and potentially improve reproductive outcomes.

The future of infertility treatment will not rely solely on better medications or laboratory techniques – it will also depend on smarter data, better prevention, and precision medicine.”
