“Advancing PGT-A: A New Multicenter Clinical Study Launched in China
In October 2025, a collaborative study led by Prof. Hongli Yan and the team at Shanghai Changhai Hospital, together with Yikon Genomics, was published online in Human Reproduction Open (IF 11.1, JCR Q1).
The study, titled ‘Rapid and minimally invasive preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A) based on polar body and nanopore sequencing’, introduces a novel PGT-A strategy that combines polar body biopsy with nanopore sequencing.
Key clinical advantages highlighted in the study include:
- Minimally invasive biopsy approach
- Rapid turnaround time
- No requirement for blastocyst culture
- Compatibility with fresh embryo transfer
- Effective detection of maternal-origin chromosomal aneuploidies
This approach offers a promising alternative for patients who face challenges with blastocyst culture, including advanced maternal age and diminished ovarian reserve.
Building on these encouraging single-center results, a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial has now officially been launched. Led by Shanghai Changhai Hospital and involving multiple reproductive centers nationwide in collaboration with Yikon Genomics, the study aims to compare:
- Polar body–based PGT-A
- Conventional trophectoderm biopsy–based PGT-A
- In terms of embryo usability and clinical outcomes in advanced maternal age patients.
This initiative represents not only the launch of a clinical study, but also a collective commitment by China’s reproductive medicine community to explore more efficient, patient-friendly, and accessible pathways for embryo screening.
We look forward to sharing further updates as this important study progresses.”
