Exploring Iron Deposition in Ovarian Endometriomas – RBMO
Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This study assesses the iron levels of ovarian endometriomas and the surrounding ovarian tissue through MRI-R2* non-invasively, and to explore the short-term effect of ovarian endometrioma surgery on iron deposition.
The authors found that excess iron may leak out from the endometrioma and diffuse into the surrounding ovarian tissue. The iron deposition in the affected-side ovarian tissue did not improve immediately after ovarian cystectomy. Unilateral surgery did not significantly reduce ovarian reserve, as measured by AMH levels, whereas bilateral surgery led to a notable decline. Postoperative CA125 decline suggests its potential for monitoring treatment efficacy in endometriosis.
Based on their findings, the authors suggest further studies on the effect of iron deposition on ovarian endometriosis could facilitate the development of novel pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies for the disease.
