Sara Safabakhsh: Endometriosis: Current Evidence and Clinical Perspectives
Sara Safabakhsh, Medical Doctor at Safari Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Endometriosis: Current Evidence and Clinical Perspectives
Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age. Despite its high prevalence, the average delay in diagnosis remains 7–10 years, largely due to nonspecific symptoms and the lack of reliable non-invasive diagnostic tools.
Clinically, endometriosis is associated with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, infertility, and impaired quality of life, often accompanied by psychological comorbidities such as anxiety and depression.
Recent evidence highlights several key developments:
Increasing recognition of endometriosis as a systemic inflammatory condition, rather than a localized gynecologic disease
A paradigm shift toward early clinical diagnosis, supported by imaging modalities such as expert transvaginal ultrasound and MRI
Ongoing research into non-hormonal and targeted therapies, aiming to improve long-term symptom control and fertility outcomes
Strong emphasis on multidisciplinary management, integrating gynecology, pain medicine, reproductive endocrinology, and mental health care.
Early diagnosis and individualized treatment strategies are essential to reduce disease burden, prevent progression, and improve reproductive and psychosocial outcomes.
Raising clinical awareness and adhering to evidence-based guidelines are crucial steps toward improving care for patients with endometriosis.
