New Evidence Links APS Antibodies to Severe Mental Illness – Thrombosis Update
Thrombosis Update shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Silvia Hoirisch-Clapauch and Antonio E. Nardi:
“New article in Thrombosis Update
Researchers have found that specific antiphospholipid antibody (APLA) profiles dramatically increase the risk of severe mental illness (SMI) in patients with primary APS.
A long-term case-control study suggests that individuals with multiple or high-titer APLA are at a seven to 21-fold increased risk of developing psychosis, severe depression, and/or high impulsivity. The findings support the hypothesis that autoimmunity plays a significant role in severe mental disorders.
This work highlights the need for:
- Routine mental health screening in high-risk APS patients.
- Further research into antibody-reduction protocols as a potential new intervention for treatment-resistant SMI
