Steven Palter: It is time to retire the out of date ‘2 week wait’ for pregnancy tests after IVF

Steven Palter, Founder, Medical and Scientific Director of Gold Coast IVF, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It is time to retire the out of date ‘2 week wait’ for pregnancy tests after IVF.
New study confirms high predictive value of hcg test as early as 7 days post blastocyst IVF transfer. But our patients have known this !

A new report of >18491 cycles demonstrated day 7 testing highly predictive of live pregnancy with threshold of 31 miu/mL

Decades ago we waited 2 weeks because fresh hcg triggers lingered in blood and gave false positives earlier and because assays were less sensitive at the low end. With frozen day 5 transfers and modern assays all that has changed.

I’ve been testing 8 days post day 5 transfer for 10 years. Online our patients share on social media to test early but many say they are scared to share the news with their treating doctors ortheir doctors won’t confirm until day 10 or 14. Hundreds of videos therefore exist guiding them to self interpretations.

Lets encourage early testing and support them – the data agrees.
