“How can we better support health workers to provide quality sexual and reproductive health services to adolescents in the Democratic Republic of Congo?
In many places, adolescents struggle to get the respectful, quality health services they need, partly because health workers may lack specific training or hold judgmental attitudes.
Eric Mafuta and colleagues report on the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a package of interventions designed to improve the performance of health workers providing Sexual and Reproductive Health services to adolescents and young people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
So, did this package work? the answer is a promising, yes. Health facility managers and workers found the approach both feasible and highly acceptable.
They reported that it effectively improved their knowledge, skills, and motivation. The collaborative learning sessions, in particular, built confidence and fostered a more supportive team environment. While most adolescent clients reported positive experiences, a few still encountered judgmental comments, showing there is more work to be done to shift deep-seated attitudes.
This research demonstrates that a well-rounded support system, not just single trainings, can successfully equip and motivate health workers to provide better, more adolescent-friendly care.
Delivering sexual and reproductive health for adolescents and young people requires a careful appreciation of how skills and norms interact – skills are not neutral; they can reinforce or disrupt prevailing norms. Co-creating solutions with adolescents and young people must be intentional, ensuring services reflect their needs, expectations, and lived realities (e.g. the digital age) and uphold their dignity and rights.”
