ACOG Publishes Updated Guidance on Evaluation of Postmenopausal Bleeding – ACOG
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) shared post on LinkedIn:
“Updated guidance from ACOG aims to reduce the risk of a missed cancer diagnosis and provide clinicians with a more reliable path to diagnosing and treating endometrial cancer. ACOG now recommends that a combination of transvaginal ultrasonography and endometrial tissue sampling be used as part of the initial evaluation in most patients with postmenopausal bleeding.
For some patients presenting with postmenopausal bleeding, relying on ultrasound alone may carry a greater risk of missing a cancer diagnosis: recent studies suggesting that 5–12% of cancers may go undiagnosed on initial presentation.
In addition to encouraging prompt diagnosis and treatment of patients with endometrial cancer, this dual approach aims to reduce health care-associated burdens for those who have limited access to prompt gynecologic, radiologic, and oncologic care.
