Panicos Shangaris: Maternal–Fetal Immune Rejection in Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis
Panicos Shangaris, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in The Journal of Pathology:
“Thrilled to share our invited commentary just published in The Journal of Pathology: ‘Maternal–foetal immune rejection: parallels between placental CHI and allograft rejection‘ featuring a new article by Albersammer et al, 2025.
Chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) has long puzzled clinicians and researchers. In this piece, we, Panicos Shangaris and María Teresa Martín Monreal, explore the striking parallels between CHI and antibody-mediated rejection in organ transplantation, suggesting CHI may be a form of maternal–fetal immune rejection.
This shift in perspective could open the door to predictive diagnostics and immunomodulatory treatments rooted in transplant medicine.
