“Endometrial Polyp on Ultrasound

Endometrial polyps are localized overgrowths of the endometrial lining that project into the uterine cavity. They are a common cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, and postmenopausal bleeding.

Ultrasound Findings:

  • Well-defined echogenic intracavitary mass within the endometrium
  • May cause focal thickening of the endometrial stripe
  • Often associated with a single feeding vessel on Color Doppler (pedicle artery sign)
  • Best visualized during the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle
  • Saline Infusion Sonohysterography (SIS) improves detection and characterization

Clinical Importance

Can occur in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women

Most are benign, but histopathological evaluation may be required in symptomatic or high-risk patients

May contribute to infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss

Sonographer Tip: When focal endometrial thickening is identified, carefully assess for a feeding vessel using Color Doppler and consider SIS for further evaluation.”
