Magdalena Depa-Martynow: Psychological Safety in IVF Is Emerging as a Critical Pillar of Team Wellbeing
Magdalena Depa-Martynow, Director, Global Clinical Science and Education at Nexpring Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Still feeling the energy from this year’s European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). Presenting my poster sparked conversations I will carry with me for a long time. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive – colleagues described the work as ‘novel’, ‘needed’, ‘innovative’, ‘amaizing’ and ‘finally naming what many of us feel but rarely articulate’.
Psychological safety in IVF is emerging as a critical pillar of both team wellbeing and patient outcomes.
- Embryologists psychological safety vs region: Across the full cohort, psychological safety differed significantly by region, experience level, and domain. APAC led the way, followed by the Americas, while Europe showed the lowest levels of psycholigical safety.
- Embryologists psychological safety vs experience: Experienced embryologists reported higher psychological safety than their less‑experienced peers.
- Embryologists psychological safety vs leadership and results: Overall psychological safety was moderate, yet belief in its impact on outcomes was extremely strong. This mismatch is powerful: we value psychological safety, but we don’t all experience it. Psychological safety is built – or blocked – by everyday leadership behaviours. Predictive modelling in this study highlighted exactly that. The strongest predictors were leadership actions: encouraging open communication, constructive feedback, openness to suggestions, and visible commitment to patient safety and staff wellbeing. Respectful communication and freedom to voice concerns also played essential roles. It’s time for leaders to rebuild trust through transparency and empowerment.
This is only the beginning. If there is an opportunity to strengthen IVF outcomes and illuminate the missing pieces of the success puzzle, I am fully committed to pursuing it. I’m already expanding this research in several directions and warmly welcome collaboration with IVF clinics globally who are ready to invest in healthier, safer, and more innovative team cultures.”
