Why Do We Need an Early Detection Test for Ovarian Cancer? – OCRF

Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Why do we need an early detection test for ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer often starts in the fallopian tubes. It stays hidden deep in the pelvis, so symptoms are vague and usually appear only once the disease has spread, by which stage survival rates are less than 30 per cent.

Current tools like pelvic exams, ultrasounds and the CA125 blood test simply aren’t sensitive or specific enough to reliably find small, early-stage tumours.

The ability to detect cancers such as breast, prostate, melanoma and bowel, at an early stage, has been a key factor in the rapid improvement in survival rates for these diseases. In the case of ovarian cancer, there is still no effective test to find it before it is symptomatic.
