“The Hidden Cost of Excessive Laser Use During Trophectoderm Biopsy
Laser-assisted trophectoderm biopsy has transformed the practice of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), providing a precise and efficient method for obtaining embryonic cells. However, precision should never be confused with excessive laser application.
Each laser pulse delivers localized thermal energy. While modern infrared lasers are designed to minimize collateral damage, repeated or unnecessary laser pulses can lead to cumulative thermal stress, potentially affecting neighboring trophectoderm cells.
Excessive laser exposure may result in:
- Thermal injury to adjacent cells.
- Reduced viability of trophectoderm cells.
- Disruption of cell-to-cell junctions.
- Impaired blastocyst expansion or re-expansion following biopsy.
- Increased cellular stress that may negatively influence implantation potential.
The objective of embryo biopsy is not simply to obtain enough cells, but to preserve the biological integrity of the embryo while collecting an adequate diagnostic sample.
An experienced embryologist should therefore focus on:
- Using the minimum effective number of laser pulses.
- Optimizing laser power and pulse duration through regular validation.
- Selecting the biopsy site carefully to reduce unnecessary manipulation.
- Performing the procedure with efficiency and consistency to minimize overall embryo stress.
In IVF laboratories, every manipulation matters. The quality of a biopsy is measured not only by obtaining sufficient DNA for genetic analysis, but also by how well the embryo is protected throughout the procedure.
Sometimes, the best technique is not the one that uses the most technology—but the one that applies it with the greatest precision.”
